Active Seniors

Picture
Therapeutic touch has countless benefits for our elders. Aging bodies carry a lifetime of physical, mental and emotional stress. The goals of a senior massage are to optimize vitality and quality of life by reducing physical aches and pains while nurturing the emotional needs of the client. Seniors enjoy the personal relationship and connection they build with their therapists, which can help to reduce loneliness and depression.

Senior massage borrows many techniques from traditional massage, however, they are applied with extra attention and care. Sessions are typically shorter, ranging from 30 to 60 minutes and often begin with the therapist passively stretching the client. Extra time and attention are given to positioning, particularly when the client is in a wheelchair or has other mobility limitations. Rarely is the client asked to move during the session.

As with all forms of massage, geriatric massage helps prevent conditions from occurring or worsening and aids in reducing symptoms of already present illnesses. Massage increases circulation, reduces blood pressure and enhances respiration, all of which are great benefits for the heart. It rids the body of toxins, which can help reduce inflammation and ease joint pain. Massage slows the effects of aging in regards to muscle and bone deterioration. Massage therapists work closely with other health professionals to specifically address conditions such as arthritis, asthma, diabetes, anxiety, and many more.

Perhaps the greatest gift of a senior massage is that it assists seniors in their drive to be active, independent and connected. By reducing pain and promoting health, massage helps seniors to maintain a meaningful lifestyle and experience mind-body harmony.
